Mu

University of Minnesota

About the Chapter

Mu Chapter emerged from the Pi Alpha Tau college club with the public support of the president from the University of Minnesota. The students sought fellowship among African Americans to promote the best interest of the race on campus. The chapter was chartered on April 12, 1912, and became the 11th Chapter of the fraternity and first in scholarship at the university.

The existence of Mu in the community proved to bring value to the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul and expanded the footprint of the fraternity with the Mu chapter-led establishment of an alumni chapter. The chapter birthed one of the greatest General Presidents of the fraternity, Brother Raymond W. Cannon, who also served as the first editor of the Sphinx magazine. He defined the true essence of brotherhood in his writings, speeches, and poems.
