Iota Lambda

About the Chapter

Iota Lambda Chapter was chartered on April 17, 1922. The chapter was established by Brother Fairfax of Ohio University and Brother Powell of Tau Chapter. Iota Lambda was somewhat unique in that the original chapter charter authorized the intake of college Brothers at Bloomington, DePauw, and Purdue. It would surrender this role by the latter part of the 20th century.

Brother Sydney P. Brown is the author of one of our Fraternity’s most beloved poems, The House of Alpha. He attributes the inspiration behind writing the poem from his stays in the Midwestern Region with Theta Chapter around 1921, and The Impactful Iota Lambda Chapter in August 1922, just four months after its chartering. In the December 1923 edition of the Sphinx, his brother Oscar Brown, who was a member of Iota Lambda, as well as the Fraternity’s Editor of the Sphinx, had his poem printed for the very first time for all of Alpha to see.
