Alpha Zeta

About the Chapter

Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray was the first Brother to establish a presence on the campus of West Virginia State University (WVSU) located in Institute, West Virginia when he was hired as a teacher for General Science and Assistant Director of Agriculture from 1912-1916. Other Brothers were also hired as faculty or employed in the adjacent city of Charleston, West Virginia. These men established Alpha Zeta Chapter on December 23, 1921 at WVSU. During the infancy of the chapter the Go-to-High School Go-To-College program was successful. The then all-AZ Chapter editorial staff published the first yearbook in the history of the school during 1923 called “EL OJO” [Spanish], which translated into English as “The Eye”. The legacy of AZ can be observed through unconditional brotherhood, a motif consciousness in the chosen professions of AZ brothers, and a watchful eye over the affairs of the campus.
