Alpha Xi Lambda

About the Chapter

On November 3, 1928, Alpha Xi Lambda was granted a charter, officially establishing an Alumni Chapter in Toledo, Ohio. The chartering ceremony, held at the Indiana Avenue YMCA, was attended by General President B. Andrew Rose and General Treasurer Percival R. Piper. Recognizing the need for a unified group of Black community leaders with a national presence, a strong foundation was laid for a lasting impact. Their efforts helped advance the pursuit of equal citizenship, foster leadership within the community, and promote service to humanity. During the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Alpha Xi Lambda provided financial support at both local and national levels. In the 1970s, the chapter shifted its focus toward addressing housing needs for Toledo’s senior citizens, leading to the development of Alpha Towers, a 165-unit high-rise complex.
