Alpha Upsilon

Alpha Upsilon was established as a college chapter in Detroit, Michigan to embrace the underrepresented Black men of the City College of Detroit, Detroit College of Medicine and Surgery, and the Detroit College of Law, which are now known as Wayne State University. Chartered on March 27, 1926. Alpha Upsilon, “The Gold Chapter”, is the oldest historically Black organization for men at Wayne State University. Since its establishment, AU has initiated men who have been among the most active stewards in Detroit and at Wayne State. During the Detroit riots of 1967, for example, the brothers of Alpha Upsilon worked with other community patrons to help rebuild the city. Years later Mario Swann, a chapter brother, was one of the principal leaders in the student-led demonstration of 1989 that finally brought the Department of Africana Studies to Wayne State University.
