Beta Eta

The Beta Eta Chapter has a story rooted in leadership, scholarship, and service. At the 26th General convention, Brother Sidney A. Jones, Jr. was elected Western Vice-President. Four months prior to the special convention, Brother Jones was responsible for establishing Beta Eta Chapter on Thursday, April 12, 1934. At the time, the campus was called Southern Illinois Normal College but is now known as Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Beta Chapter is the 51st house of Alpha. Beta Eta is home to the late, great Brother Dick Gregory, who was initiated into the chapter in 1954. Beta Eta brothers were instrumental in creating the Black Affairs Council, formerly known as the Black Student Union, to create a more secured spot for the Black students on the SIUC campus. Beta Eta has stood on the mission, objectives, and aims of Alpha Phi Alpha since its chartering.
