Delta Epsilon Lambda
About the Chapter
Delta Epsilon Lambda, “Champion City Alphas”, was chartered on December 14, 1947, in East St. Louis, Illinois by eleven distinguished members who contributed greatly to the uplifting of the community. Circuit Judge Dr. William “Billy” Jones served as the chapter’s first president. He served in this capacity for eleven years (1947-1958). Brother Jones also served Alpha Phi Alpha as General Counsel and Vice President of the Midwestern Region. Several chapter members succeeded Bro. Jones by serving as the Illinois District Director (Bro. Mike Boyd) and past Regional Chaplain (Bro. Dr. Phoenix Barnes) to name a few.
Grounded in leadership, academic excellence, and community service, the Champion City Alphas embody the fraternity’s mission while meeting community needs in East St. Louis, Illinois. Delta Epsilon Lambda also provides educational support to area youth through their Lights of Alpha Program and various academic and trade scholarship opportunities.
