Eta Eta
Western Illinois University
About the Chapter
The Eta Eta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., has been elevating and impacting the campus of Western Illinois University since 1970. The chapter was chartered during a period of racial tension and limited Black student representation on campus, with the Black student population at WIU being less than 5%. The development of the chapter was guided by eight great charter members: Bro. Randy Twilley, Bro. Kamal Rashid, Bro. Arnie C. Travis III, Bro. Ronald W. Parker, Jr, Bro. Dr. Robert E. Weems, Bro. Melvin L. Funchess, Bro. William R. Hayes, Jr, and Bro. Robert Thurston. Their efforts culminated in the granting of the charter on August 31, 1970, coinciding with a rare solar eclipse. Being chartered at a predominately white institution came with some challenges, but the chapter continues to prevail, holding the light high.
As the 360th House, the chapter that brought Alpha full circle, they pride themselves on true brotherhood and look forward to many more years at Western Illinois University.
