About the Chapter
In 1915, the Beta Phi Fraternity at the University of Illinois petitioned to be absorbed into Alpha Phi Alpha. The application was officially approved and in 1917, 11 men chartered Tau Chapter.
The chapter grew in scope and influence quickly, becoming a pivotal force in the fraternity, especially on the state and regional level. The chapter and its members have also had a measurable impact on the African American community in the Urbana Champaign area.
Members of Tau Chapter have excelled in the areas of entrepreneurship, aviation, politics, medicine and government. Tau Chapter celebrated its centennial in 2017, where over 150 alumni members joined to celebrate the legacy of the chapter, which included 100 consecutive years of service to the University without suspension.
